Guide to Diamond Ring

Anatomy of a Diamond

The 4C’s of Diamond

The 4Cs of diamonds – Carat, Cut, Colour, and Clarity – form the cornerstone of diamond grading. Developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), these criteria collectively define a diamond's quality.

Understanding the 4Cs allow you to make informed decisions, appreciating the distinctive qualities that contribute to a diamond's beauty and value.

Independent Diamond Certification

What is diamond certification, and how are diamonds independently certified? It serves as an assurance that you are getting an accurately graded, high quality diamond.

GIA & IGI Certified Diamonds

Every naturally mined and lab-grown loose diamond sold by Tailored Jewel has undergone analysis and grading by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) respectively. These laboratories are widely recognised as among the most reputable in the diamond industry.

Diamonds accompanied by GIA/IGI grading reports hold the highest value in the industry.

Precious Metals

Gold

Gold has an extraordinary heritage with unique qualities. As an enduring element found naturally in a distinct yellow colour, gold is resistant to rust, tarnish, and corrosion. Although gold is very strong, it’s also the most malleable of all precious metals.

Pure gold is too soft for everyday wear, so it is alloyed with a mixture of metals like silver, copper, nickel, and zinc to give it strength and durability. Karatage, denoted by a number followed by 'k,' indicates purity or how much of the metal in a piece of jewellery is gold. Karatage is expressed in 24ths, making 24k gold 100% gold.

We craft our jewellery using both 18k and 14k gold. 18k gold is composed of 75% gold, alloyed with other metals to ensure strength for everyday wear. In contrast, 14k gold consists of 58.5% gold and 41.5% other metals.

The colour of gold is determined by:

  • Type of Metal Alloys: The specific metals mixed with gold, such as copper, silver, or palladium
  • Percentage of Each Alloy: The proportion of each metal alloy used in the gold mixture.

Gold jewellery prices depend on the purity of the gold used (karat weight), the market value of gold, and the craftsmanship and design of each piece.

Since gold is a natural element, it can be affected by harsh chemicals like chlorine and cleaning products. We recommend removing your jewellery when using chemicals to reduce daily abrasions and prolong its lustre. To clean gold jewellery, use a solution of warm water and detergent-free soap with a soft-bristled brush. When not in use, store your gold pieces in soft cloth bags or the original box to protect them from everyday exposure.

Yellow Gold

Natural gold and vibrant alloys create the rich shine of yellow gold jewellery. Commonly used alloys include copper, which adds a red hue, and silver, which contributes a greenish tone. A careful blend of copper, silver, and pure gold results in yellow gold's distinctive warmth and luster.

White Gold

White gold jewellery is prized for its sleek, silvery-white appearance. This is achieved by alloying gold with naturally white metals and plating it with rhodium, a hard, durable element. Although rhodium is strong, it can wear away over time. Replating is an easy process that can restore your jewellery's pristine whiteness.

Rose Gold

The beautiful pink hue of rose gold jewellery is achieved by blending gold with copper alloy. While the overall percentages of metal alloys in rose gold are similar to those in yellow or white gold, the unique mixture of copper gives rose gold its distinctive pink colour.

Platinum

Platinum is our most popular metal for engagement rings and wedding bands. Its naturally white sheen will never fade or change color, accentuating the sparkle and brilliance of a diamond.

Platinum, known for its everlasting durability, serves as the ultimate symbol for true, enduring, and everlasting love.

Platinum jewellery is exceptionally rare, being 30 times scarcer than gold.

Our platinum, composed of 95% purity (5% iridium, palladium, ruthenium, and other alloys), boasts natural hypoallergenic properties, making it ideal for individuals with sensitive skin issues.

Platinum is durable. Its density makes it the most secure setting for your diamond or precious gemstone. All our platinum rings are crafted with platinum prongs for setting loose diamonds. Because platinum is a naturally white metal, replating is unnecessary; it will always hold its beauty.

Though it is the strongest of jewellery metals, platinum can incur a scratch and develop a patina layer. The patina is considered by many to be a unique and often desirable attribute. However, the pre-patina shine and reflective lustre can easily be revived by merely buffing it with a soft cloth.

It's easy. Simply soak platinum in a mild solution of warm soapy water, and then gently scrub it with a soft-bristled brush.

Tantalum

Rare, pure, and dense, tantalum distinguishes itself among contemporary metals.

In its natural state, Tantalum exhibits a beautiful grey hue with a bluish tint. To impart a matte black appearance and enhance scratch resistance when used as a jewellery material, a special patent-pending ceramic glaze is applied.

Inert, hypoallergenic, and heat-resistant, Tantalum also finds broad applications in surgical and dental equipment.

Tantalum is our newest addition to the contemporary metals lineup, offering high scratch resistance and hypoallergenic properties.

Naturally a blue-grey metal, our Tantalum is 99% pure and coated with a ceramic glaze, resulting in a stylish matte black finish.

To clean tantalum jewellery, use a solution of warm water and detergent-free soap. Gently clean the jewellery with a soft cloth to maintain its appearance.

When not in use, store your tantalum pieces in soft cloth bags or their original box. This helps protect them from daily exposure and potential damage.

Tantalum does not tarnish and is highly scratch-resistant. However, it may develop a natural wear pattern over time.

Titanium

Titanium is known for its grayish color and ease of polishing throughout the ring's lifetime. Combining lightweight strength with durability, titanium is resistant to tarnishing and corrosion. Its lightweight nature makes it comfortable to wear, making it an ideal choice for those with an active lifestyle.

Titanium is a unique and durable metal, highly valued for men’s wedding bands. With a strong foundation in engineering and aerospace industries, titanium is known for its lasting strength. Our men’s titanium rings are 99% pure and nickel-free, offering hypoallergenic benefits and exceptional wearability.

Titanium, as a natural element, can be affected by harsh chemicals such as chlorine and other cleaning products. To maintain its polish and minimize daily abrasions, it's advisable to remove your jewellery when using these chemicals. For cleaning titanium jewellery, use a solution of warm water and detergent-free soap, and gently clean with a soft cloth.

When not in use, store your titanium pieces in soft cloth bags or their original box. This helps protect them from the elements and reduces the risk of damage from daily exposure.

Measure Your Ring Size

1
Prepare Your Finger

Make sure your finger is at room temperature and your hands are clean and dry to avoid any inaccuracies caused by moisture or swelling

2
Set Up the Sizer

Slide the tip of the ring sizer through the buckle to create a loop. Place the loop over your finger.

3
Adjust the Fit

Pull the end of the sizer to tighten it or push it to loosen. Adjust until the loop fits snugly at the base of your finger, where you plan to wear the ring.

4
Check the Fit

Slide the sizer off and on a few times. It should fit snugly around the base of your finger and offer some resistance when sliding past your knuckle. Make sure it doens't slide off easily.

5
Read Your Size

Look at the arrow on the buckle. Each line represents a full size. If the arrow points between two lines, it’s a half size.

6
Update Your Ring Size

Once you've found your size, check your order confirmation email and click “Update My Ring Size” button to update your size.
